About
Our Story
Carousel Tattoo & Barbershop in Port Dalhousie, St. Catharines, was founded by Jordan Campbell on October 2nd, 2017 out of his passion for tattooing and affection for barbering. The story of Carousel Tattoo & Barbershop goes all the way back to the first tattoo shops found in New York City, which catered to seafarers who took advantage of getting a haircut and some permanent ink. During this era, tattoo and barbershops often shared a storefront. In fact, some of the most infamous tattoo artists of the early 20th century in New York City started out as barbers, and often tattooed behind the partition of a traditional barbershop.
Between the 1880’s to WWII, Coney Island grew to become the largest amusement area in North America. The various amusement parks located on Coney Island drew millions of adventure seeking people to the small strip of land which in turn led to the opening of businesses that catered to this mass of adventure seekers. Among these businesses were barbershops and, of course . . . tattoo shops.
It was during this same time that the now iconic Old Port Dalhousie carousel was brought to Lakeside Park, as part of an amusement park of its own. The carousel was built in 1903 by the Charles I.D. Looff company and carved in the “Coney Island” style. Now the only remaining attraction ride, the Port Dalhousie carousel continues to provide entertainment for young and old alike at 5 cents a ride.
Carousel Tattoo & Barbershop pays homage to its New York City heritage, while bringing it into the 21st century by offering a new standard of custom tattooing and traditional barbering in a clean, family friendly environment and professional atmosphere.
